Don’t Just Watch Project Announcement: A 50 Mile Walk For Tomorrow’s World Changers

Note From Laur: Hey guys. I’m writing today about a project I’m working on that I am deeply passionate about and truly believe in. I’d like to introduce to you my way of being the change: A 50 Mile Walk: For Tomorrow’s World Changers.

I’ve created a way to take one of my greatest passions – travel and exploring the world, greatest cares – making sure the kids of today believe in themselves to improve tomorrow greatest beliefs – that anyone can take their talents and interests and and turn them into a way to change the world for the better.

I’m going to walk 50 Miles in 2 Days between May 25th & 26th along Florida’s Atlantic coastline in support of DonorsChoose.org, an amazing nonprofit that let’s you and I fulfill teacher’s requests to fund specific classroom projects at schools in need, be it a set of To Kill a Mockingbird books for a class of sophomores in LA or a computer to start a school newspaper for a classroom in the Bronx.

You know how there’s those kids out there whose schools just don’t have the kind of funding they need to really teach kids to be all they can be? Their classrooms don’t have books or libraries, they don’t have the materials to start programs like a leadership group, they don’t have basic instruments to have an orchestra, they don’t have a computer in the classroom to type their essays (or blog posts!).

So, I thought of a way to help.

My goal is to raise at least $1,000 not only to fund these classroom projects but also to show these kids -tomorrow’s world changers- that simply with passion and big thinking, they can do whatever they set their mind to.

To help me reach that goal, I’m asking for your help: simply choose whatever amount is within your means and sponsor a certain amount per mile walked.

I’m starting off with $200 of my own. I am confident that we’ll go over $1,000–because our Mad to Live community is so awesome! Whether you want to sponsor $1.00 per mile for a total of $50.00, or $0.10 a mile for a total of $5.00 – every bit helps!

These kids are going to be the ones that will be changing the world for us tomorrow. They’ll be the ones making sure it’s a better and better place. Let’s give them the tools, resources, and inspiration they need to realize that they can do that.

After the funds are raised between today and the completion of the walk on the May 25th I’ll be donating 100% to specific projects on DonorsChoose. I encourage you to check out their site and see just how it works. We’ll know exactly which teacher, which kids, which class, which school, which project our efforts will go to.

Not only will these classrooms get what they need, but the teachers and their kids will know it’s coming from us. Once DonorsChoose.org sends the classrooms the materials that our donations will have funded, the teachers will send us photos and hand-written thank you notes from the students.

They’ll know that these things came from us, and that carries even more weight…it shows these kids not only that people care, but that they themselves can create a project, reach out to those that share their passions, get support, and help someone in need. Let’s Lead By Example. It’s a chance to show them that no matter who they are or where they’re from, they can inspire others to make the world a better place, and be the person they’re meant to be.

And so here I am, staying true to the very things I speak about on this blog on living a wild, crazy, meaningful life. Here I am, calling on you guys, the people in this world that are doing the same thing in so many amazing ways, and inviting you to join me on this passion project.

Let’s really make something happen for these kids. Let’s be leaders so they can be leaders. Let’s make the world a better place.

I thank you – those of you living an inspired and inspiring life – for reading, sharing, and helping.

About Lauren Rains

Life gets pretty f*cking nuts sometimes, doesn't it? Every day I wake up more to myself and more to this world. This website is an expression of that.

Space Travelers is multi-layered exploration of our existence here on this rock we call Earth. We're going to talk about the matrix, UFOs, and astral travel, and explore our awakening into the divine masculine and feminine. We'll discover our bodies both the physical and subtle body. We'll contemplate the sacredness of mother earth and the concept of who/what the hell made this place in the first place?

I also aim to keep this website rooted and grounded, referring to topics that are effecting us in the here and now, such as fighting against the oppression of women worldwide, pealing away layers of social conditioning greedy capitalists are using to turn us into consumers, and navigating this insane technological revolution before the AI take over. I can geek out on consciousness up in space all day, but life happens here on the ground and this is the time we were born into.

This website is about integrating into our full human experience, aligning with ourselves and with each other, shedding skins and transcending into the unfolding layers of ourselves.

My wish for you, and for myself, is to unfold and evolve into our highest selves. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. We need not sell our souls to the status quo.

I'm on the journey too. I write this blog to speak to others who are waking up, or who desire to wake up. Because we can't do this alone.

  • Best of luck Lauren – I know you are going to kill this. I definitely think that you will be able to recruit more walkers and more people to support the cause, and when it comes to kids and schools, maybe wouldn’t be a bad idea to see if you could get a corporate sponsorship to either donate or match whatever you raise.

When I lived in California, my wife and family and I all participated in the CHOC Walk (www.chocwalk.org) which was a donation based (you had to donate $25-50 to participate and you could raise more) walk that took place at Disneyland to support the Childrens Hospital of Orange County, where my brother was treated 5 years ago. The corporate sponsorships are huge, especially when it comes to kids.

    Best of luck!

    • Hey Justin!!!!

Thanks so much for your support!!! I am in contact with a few businesses and groups about sponsorship opportunities and am SO EXCITED to hopefully make them happen! I really think that we can do a lot of good with this thing and even just in the past few hours the results I’ve seen are so inspiring!!!
I have to say though that your comment gets me more motivated to seek out some different sponsorship outlets… suggesting a match is a great idea! Thank you for that!!!
      – Laur

What if we live in Florida and want to participate in the walk?

    • Hey Jade!!!!
Hmm we very well may be able to make something happen! Where in FL are you based?
THank you so much for your interest & support!
      – Laur 🙂

      • Jade

Orlando, but I can probably drive (or WALK) to where I need to be to participate!

  • Awesome initiative, Lauren, and I’m all about encouraging people to lead by example in their own walks (no pun!) of life, in whatever ways they choose, for whatever causes that motivate them. We need to inspire this sort of positive action across the globe, and it takes initiatives like this and small actions to build momentum to help spark change on a grand scale.

I’ll be happy to support this cause with my own dollars and promote it across the web! Carry on!!

    • Hey Dave! I could not agree with you more on that! It’s so much of the things we can do out of the box ourselves and w the help and support of our peers that can reallybmake a difference. We all have the talent and passion to do it too which is so great!
Thank you so much for your support Dave. I appreciate it so much! 🙂

  • Hey! If I click to donate, I can donate a flat donation right? So it’s not per-mile, ya?

    • Hey shannyn! thank you so much due your interest and support! it means so much! 🙂 and yes, its just a one time donation! it won’t multiply by 50 haha. I should make that more clear so thanks for asking ! 🙂

  • Very inspiring! I’ve been toying with this awful idea of doing an ultra marathon. Something like 100 miles sounds right. I may have to copy this style and make it a fundraiser. I am not sure I have the self discipline to do it otherwise.

But this is truly a great idea! Get those kids to be made to live! 🙂

    • Hey David!!!!
100 Miles! You are the man! Make sure you give your feet some tender loving care before embarking on that badass mission!
You’ll have to let me know when you start that Forrest GUmp-esque journey!
      – Laur 🙂

  • Hey Lauren!

This is awesome, good for you! I did the 39 mile Avon Walk for Breast Cancer last May and my one piece of advice is you must take care of your feet! I had no problem with the distance, but my feeeeet. Even training in the shoes and socks I wore for the actual walk didn’t make much of a difference-I got so many blisters. There are all these crazy advice blogs about coating your feet in all kinds of stuff before putting your socks on, and as crazy as they sound-they worked! And make sure you change your socks every couple hours to avoid blisters. Oh and make sure you have plenty of room in the toe area — some people lost toenails!
..Why don’t you hit me up when it gets closer and I can give you some ‘taking care of your feet’ adivce..that’s enough for here haha :).

Awesome though — I think this is a great idea, and I definitely agree with the people above in that you could probably recruit more people and make this really big. Good luck!

    • Hey Ainsley!
Wow you are so right! I hadn’t even really given much thought to all of that but it is definitely something that I need to think about! I will be surely getting in touch with you later this week to get the downlow on what I need to do tmake sure my feet don’t fal off haha.
I do not want to loose a toe nail! haha. I’m excited to do all 50 miles b/c it’ll definitely be a good physical challenge, but you’re right- i gtotta do it right!!!
      THanks Ainsley!
      Laur 🙂

  • I am so pumped to read about this! What an awesome project. Facebooking now… (have I told you how cool you are?)

  • Count me in, Laur…as a kid I went to one of those tiny, financially-challenged schools so I know what it’s like. I so admire you for putting this together!

    • Hey Laurie!
Thank you so much for your support! I’m just so excited to be able to do something! We all have the power to make a difference so I’m proud to practice what I preach 🙂
And I unfortunately won’t be at WDS. I’m doing a big road trip with FoxRentaCar immediately after and timing just was cutting it a little too short. I want to go so bad though! I’ll be there in spirit though / following the #WDS hashtag on twitter haha 😛
      Thanks Laurie!
      Lauren 🙂

  • I just gave a small donation. I know how much it meant to me when people would contribute to my blog fundraiser to rescue a pug named Ralph (who I have now adopted). I’m working on a diff fundraiser now and am always happy to spread the success to other people doing great things via blogging! Keep up the good work!

    • Hey Shannyn!!!
Thank you so much for your contribution! You are amazing! That’s so great you were able to rescue Ralph 🙂 I actually foster dogs quite often until I can find them an owner that will love them. I actually would love to have my own dog too but w the way I’m addicted to travel, I just can’t have one just yet. But when I can, i’ll def. be getting a shelter dog that truly needs a home 🙂
Cheers to doing some beautiful things with your blog Shannyn!
      Thank you!
      Laur 🙂

  • This is great, Puma. I’m proud of you 🙂

I remember knocking on neighbours doors as a child to raise funds for similar initiatives put on by the community. My reach extended nearly 3 blocks. Your’s extends the whole world over.

50 miles will afford you lot’s of thinking time. I presume you’ll come back bristling with ideas and the post-walk blog post will be filled with world-changing insights. Can’t wait!

    All the best, LR

    • Hey Collin!!!
Thanks man 🙂 Yea I actually started this whole thing just as a walk so I could feel like I was traveling again. I thought it would be good for me to just relax my mind and just, GO. But then I decided to turn it into a little something bigger 🙂 I’ll definitely be bringing a notebook with me to jot down any “aha” moments I have! 🙂
THanks so much for your support Collin! You are the MAN!
