The Mad To Live http://www.themadtolive.com Sun, 16 Jul 2017 22:27:17 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.8.1 Title Who Knows 7/16 http://www.themadtolive.com/title-who-knows-716/ Sun, 16 Jul 2017 22:27:17 +0000 http://www.themadtolive.com/?p=9217 It’s a big playground we’re living in. Just like the ones you grew up playing on when you were 10 years old.

Life is no different than Roller Coaster Tycoon, The Sims, or World of War Craft. It is all a game. And we get to choose how we will play it.

As Carl Jung stated, “This whole creation is essentially subjective, and the dream is the theatre where the dreamer is at once scene, actor, prompter, stage manager, author, audience, and critic.”

It can be a little hard to grasp… to truly accept responsibility for how we perceive our lives and the happenings in our lives. We can’t do much about what happens to us — every second, ever atom, every encounter of the day is unpredictable with endless possibilities for outcomes. All we have is our perception.

It can be very tempting to think that the current, present moment we are in would be better if this were happening, or if we were in that moment from the past, or if we got to a different place in life.

The thing is, that’s living in a daydraemer’s world. It’s a beautiful escape, and one can choose to stay there if they don’t want to let go.

The only thing that exists, ultimately, is wherever you are, right here, right now, with whoever you are with and whomever is with you. That is the only reality, the only moment, the only now. We are all living out our own reality. Quantum physics even says so ;).

Approach each moment with curiosity and love. Observe your surroundings. Play in your interaction with these other souls whom you’ve bumped into on your journeys. Embrace anything that can grow from any moment. Each and every happening in your life has been created for you.

Play the game.

Life is more fun that way. 🙂

I wonder what you’ll discover…

PS: It gets easier. And better.

Diamonds on a Ring vs. Rocks on a Ring: Who Wins? http://www.themadtolive.com/diamonds-on-a-ring-vs-rocks-on-a-ring-who-wins/ Wed, 14 Jun 2017 19:37:27 +0000 http://www.themadtolive.com/?p=9202 I was making noodles this afternoon, listening to Neil deGrasse Tyson’s podcast Cosmic Queries: A Taste of Space. My fascination with the Universe has been growing exponentially each day. They were mentioning diamonds, and the nonchalantly intelligent astrophysicist mentioned that diamonds aren’t even that rare here on earth.

Which made me think about how they say “diamonds are forever” in the wedding industry, and how much money I’ve seen people spend on these little shiny not-so-rare items they wear on their fingers, and how in our society the bigger the better and the bigger the more $$$ we get to let people know we have…

If most diamonds aren’t all that rare, then why have we gotten so caught up and controlled by them? Really, all that happened is the industry created price points and paired them with branding that tells us we’ll be happier and have a more meaningful relationship as we go up the price point ladder.

Much more meaningful and interesting might be a one of a kind meteorite that traveled through the earth’s atmosphere and slammed into the earth, or a vibrant and patterned rock with a fascinating geological history.

Much more meaningful might be a stone from a place you and yours visited together early in your relationship. Maybe its from the place you realized you were in love, or you shared your first kiss, or you first met. Maybe it’s from that park where you had sex behind that tree in the heat of the moment ;).  And perhaps you’d have an artisan carve a symbol onto that stone, and you’d attach it to a golden band and wear it on your ring finger as a reminder of what the two of you stand for in each other’s lives and the values and vision you share for one another.

Diamonds are good at protecting their surface and putting scratches in everything it scrapes against. Aside from their angles, they all look the same to the human eye. No flaws, just a bunch of hard lines. …That sounds a little too metophorical in comparison with our Western society full of monogomy to support our sexual shame, or marriages built on abuse and manipulation that look perfect on the outside.

I’m not saying that diamonds aren’t beautiful. Or that they aren’t forever. Or that they can’t mean something incredibly powerful. I think a few decades ago the story of the diamond ring to represent love might have had much more depth to it. What I’m talking about here is the industry of diamonds in our world today, the branding of diamonds and the storyline they influence in our lives, and the social pressures and stories created by how we use these rocks as a form of labeling.

Much better the meteorite. Hands down.

Our Invisible Universe vs. Our Visible Society http://www.themadtolive.com/the-makeup-of-our-invisible-universe-vs-our-invisible-society/ Fri, 12 May 2017 06:56:07 +0000 http://www.themadtolive.com/?p=9135 There’s so much happening all around us, yet our human eyes can’t se them. Only 5% of the universe is observable matter. That means that as humans, we can’t see 95% of what is happening around us.

Let’s pause for a moment…. What The Fuck?

Electrons and protons are avoiding each other. The earth is spinning round-and-round. Gravity is holding us down. Stars are blowing up in outer space. The waves of light and sound are buzzing about. Atoms are the building blocks of every single thing on this earth. Then there’s Dark Matter, which is about 80% of the Universe. We’re breathing in and out invisible air on repeat. [1]

This is all magic happening right in front of us. Why are all these things occurring?

Isn’t it peculiar that are we made of 75% water and isn’t it insane how that directly correlates with the water on this earth that keeps us alive and evaporates into an invisible gas and then falls back down from clouds as rain made of hydrogen up in the sky?

Isn’t it fascinating that the human touch can feel so powerful and we go insane without it, physics says we can never actually touch anything [2].

Isn’t it fucking incredible that plants and bacteria are able to produce glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water, using only light as a source of energy. Think about that. Every time you are looking at a plant, what you can’t see is the cells of their lives absorbing sunlight so it can grow.

Isn’t it mothafucking nuts that we are made up of stardust and that there are as many grains of sand on this earth as there are stars out their flying in space.

And how about the fact that the universe is constantly expanding? Or that the sun is one huge ball of fire, and that there are actually two stars in our galaxy that are millions of times larger than the sun itself.

Isn’t it nuts that we live on a big circular rock that is floating in some giant black abyss alongside a bunch other circular rocks made up of all kinds of crazy elements with their own atmospheres and moons and gravitational forces?

How rad is that?! How difficult is that to believe? That’s all happening… RIGHT NOW!!!!

Yet we can’t see it.

RELATING THIS TO BEING HUMAN

As you know, I like to relate what’s happening out in the real physical world, to the insane, confusing, exciting, and mystical world of being a human being in the 21st century.

Here’s the deal – In the current society we live in, we lack having a connection with the magic of the universe. One that we feel in our hearts and souls. I know that sounds corny, but hey, give me a break you know you wanna be one with your heart and soul and you know you’re curious if your soul lives on after your body dies and you know that nothing feels as good as having a full heart and feeling it beat in excitement or in love.

Basically, as human beings, we’re tempted to believe only what we see. We’re also really good at judging what we see, and labeling what we see, and then associating feelings and emotions and reactions to the words we’ve chosen to name things with.

If you and I were part of a tribe of starving jungle nomads hunting down a panther to feed our village, these abilities would be very, very useful. However, since you’re reading this blog post on a screen plugged into a wall that’s being powered by a bunch of crazy shit flying through chords that eventually connect to a bunch of others chords in something we called the GRID (just another invisible thing happening that we can’t see thanks to science and magic), I know that you’re not in a position where you must hunt panthers to survive. But maybe you’re in a jungle nomad tribe…

Because our view of the world is rooted significantly in only what our very lacking human eyes can see, we have a difficult time believing in anything that doesn’t express full certainty. And from that, one agreement is built on top of another agreement until we we’ve lost sight of it all.

This means we have a hard time believing in our “selfs”.

We have a hard time excepting that everything on this earth, including you and I, is a bunch of energy moving about together and clashing and merging.

We have a hard time respecting this earth, because we can’t see the beauty of what makes the entire thing up is the same exact thing that makes us up.

We have a hard time detaching from the social constructs of society, which are perhaps the most dangerous invisible forces on this earth.

We can’t distinguish that all human beings are equal because we’ve labeled one another based on the color or our skin or the country we come from and then we treat each other as so.

We can’t accept that the borders between our nations are man-made and not real.

Think about how much our judgement of these invisible things have created so much violence and war and hatred on this planet. Think about how much we’ve let our invisible borders distinguish which human beings must spend their lives surviving within borders of terrorism, starvation, and other atrocities.

I know that’s intense. I wish I could always keep it light on here, but this is the world we live in. Iits important to acknowledge that.

A FINAL THOUGHT… FOR NOW…

Think about this.

Think about how magical the universe is, and about how you are made up of the same stuff of it.

We spend so much time and energy associating with all these lackluster, bullshit, heavy, terrible, devastating invisible things that man has agreed on for its society, when we could be experimenting with the magical things we can’t see that are nothing but beautiful and support life and want humans to thrive and be part of the very earth they came from.

Which invisible thing would you rather let guide your life?

I want to make a difference in the world. http://www.themadtolive.com/i-want-to-make-a-difference-in-the-world/ Wed, 11 Jan 2017 07:49:53 +0000 http://www.themadtolive.com/?p=8875 I want to make a difference in the world.

I found myself thinking, “That’s who I want to be like.” Watching Barack Obama’s Farewell address today I determined I want to be a human being with that exceptional caliber of integrity, vision, and hope. He is the warrior fighting for a people’s wellbeing and has taught us what we could potentially create with one another. He has taught us to be brave, and never run away.

I want to be part of passing the that baton.

Humans have boundless potential to live lives of peace of mind, wellbeing, vitality, love, affinity, wholeness, and completeness.

For many years, I have not seen in myself how powerful I could be. And I think many of us could say the same. I think many of us don’t realize what a difference we can make.

When Barack paid homage to the people who’ve been part of his presidency since the beginning, I realized that I want to be the people in the stands in the future celebrating the triumph we’re still fighting for. In my lifetime, it is my mission that I will stand with those who fought the good fight and we will know that we succeeded.

Of course, what is life without growth? And so there will always be a reason for human beings to fight that good fight as new circumstances arrive. We fight now so we can hand the baton to those who come next.

As the world gets smaller and smaller we have increasing power to see one another, help one another, and connect with one another. In the process, we are realizing that we are not so different. That in the state of the world we live in, we’re all left living in fear. Every single one of us.

We are at a point in our human history where we are standing at a crossroads. It is possible for us to destroy ourselves just inches from the gold we’ve been digging for. We have just as much power to create a space of growth as we do to create a space of demise. There is no law that says human beings can’t destroy this earth and one another to the point of no return.

Like Barack said, we can, should, and are free to argue, debate, and challenge one another to solve these problems. We can use our words to invent possibilities for how our communities, countries, and global society can function. The power of language and discussion are one of the greatest gifts of being a human being. Pair that with the gifts of creation and imagination, and we are limitless.

We are not there yet. But we are getting there. And we need to fight for or fellow man in every from every corner of this world along the way

That’s what it comes down too.

So here is where I stand:

I am declaring my involvement in this pursuit. And I will not go gently. I want the best for every single one of us, and I will fight for everyone.

The underlying intention of everything I create, share, say and write from here on out will be rooted in the belief that one day, in my lifetime or not, all humans beings will live lives of inner-peace and wholeness. I believe that is possible. And I believe it is worth fighting to create a possibility for that.

Step by step, I will strive to break down the stories we have in our heads about the way things are, and represent all the possibilities of what we as humans could be.

Standing here, right now, I’m inventing for myself, my life, and this world I love, the possibility of being and acting boldly, with integrity and with my heart forward for the rest of my life.

In reference to wording relevant to these times we’re living in, let’s make being human and being alive, great again.

What do you declare, today?

4 Alan Watts *Chillstep* Mixes To Ground, Compel, Inspire, and Reveal http://www.themadtolive.com/alan-watt-philosophy-mixes-chillstep/ Tue, 10 Jan 2017 08:19:43 +0000 http://www.themadtolive.com/?p=8855 It was when I came across Alan Watts that my mind began to explode, implode, and come back together in ways I never knew possible. Alan Watts was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. He is an incredible example of the power of language – if we can learn to articulate for others, then we create an opening for people to take in an unfamiliar concept.

You’ll find 4 mixes of chillset and classical music intertwined with some of his best lectures.

I meditate to these. I play them in the background while I’m working. I listen to them when I’m feeling a little off and want to get my head back on straight. They’re amazing for road trips through the desert. Lay around with your friends and listen to them while you stare at the ceiling pondering life.

A huge thank you and shoutout to QMAmusic for producing these mixes. Check out their YouTube channel here.

Library of Favorite Guided Meditations http://www.themadtolive.com/library-of-favorite-guided-meditations/ Wed, 04 Jan 2017 19:50:13 +0000 http://www.TheMadToLive.com/?p=8807 The first time I meditated I hated it. “So…am I just supposed to sit here and focus on my breathe?” What? That made absolutely no sense to me.

And now I absolutely love it, and it is has been one of my guiding lights.

Whether you’ve never meditated before, you’re just getting into it, or you’re on your way to becoming a bodhisattva, I welcome you to check out the following guided meditations with a sense of curiosity.

I will not say much about what they mean to me in order to leave them to your interpretation, though I’d love to hear in the comments if any of them spoke to you. Furthermore, please share in the comments the URLs to any of your favorite meditation tracks, along with a description of it and any other notes you’d like to share. Not only would I love to check them out, but I’m sure others would as well.

Perhaps this page can become a library of meditation recommendations for one another.
