Your Life Pursuits: A Quest-like Adventure or a Bloody Uphill Battle?

You see that crazy chick in the picture over there? …Pretty sweet right? That would be me, kickin’ ass and takin’ names and looking sexy while I’m at it. It’s a lot more fun and uplifting to view the ups and downs of life’s adventures as a fearless leader than as the other dude in the picture that’s all tangled up in the monster’s claws and about to be eaten alive. (Good thing I’m about to safe his ass!)

The Adventure Choice

I made a decision a few months back to never ever look at my life as a trial, tribulation, or uphill battle again. Playing the victim roll is LAME, and I’m more interested in being a badass chick that lives my life like I have a reason to live it.

So, I encourage you to ask yourself the same question that led to me this outlook – Do you want to be a badass, Indiana Jones, Lara Croft-esque, trailblazing mover and shaker who’s on an inspiring quest to find all the hidden treasures life has to offer no matter how scared you are of snakes and bad guys, or do you want to be Negative Nancy, Carl Complainer, “why does this always happen to me”, “boo hoo hoo”, ‘I always step in shit” kind of person.

OBVIOUSLY the sexier way of looking at life is the latter… OBVIOUSLY. 😉

YOU CAN’T ARGUE AGAINST THE 99% STATISTIC

However, these are just words. For all you left brainers out there let’s get to the cold hard facts in the numbers. If you want to get technical, think about this simple statistic: 99% of our own happiness is up to us…it’s our own damn fault!

I’d say this statistic is about as true as the equation e=mc(squared) or maybe even as true as the fact that smoking cigarettes kills (Why do people still smoke then?!)  or maybe even as true as the notion that James Franco is my true love… along with John Mayer…and the cute waiter at the coffee shop I’m at right now! 😉

As far as that other little tiny 1%… that’s typically stuff we can’t control… for instance, say you’re traveling and you get 100% of your happiness taste testing all the peculiar, exciting, sometimes scary-looking food at a street market in India. Then that 1% chance of food poisoning comes in and suddenly you have a bad tummy ache to say the least, making you and your body quite unhappy… to say the least. (eek.. Okay, maybe in India that 1% is a little higher, but you get my point, right?! 😉 There will always be cirumstances we can’t change or must go through in order to take part in other things that make us happy and add to our adventure.

THE WHICH IS OBVIOUSLY BETTER GAME:

LOST AND STRANDED IN A STRANGE COUNTRY

THE BATTLE: Freak out, yell  in your native language at people  who don’t speak your language (or are pretending they don’t because you’re so insane), cry, scream, kick your feet, and go sit in a corner somewhere.

– VS. –

THE ADVENTURE: Realize this is your chance to ixnay Plan A and B and come up with an even better C that could possibly turn into one of the best times of your life! Realize that one day you’ll look back on it and it will all seem funny. Realize that this is training for other curve balls that  will happen in life that’ll be even more serious!

THE VAST BOILS OF THE DATING SCENE

THE BATTLE: You can look at the so-called “meat market” is a treacherous land of guys that are jackasses and girls that are bitches that will one day ultimately end up screwing you over. You can do the victim thing where you swear you’ll end up alone with 15 dogs and 5 cats and a rat you’ve named “Male”. You can be so self-important that you don’t have the time of day for the guy/girl that got up the nerve to drop a terrible line at you.

– VS. –

THE ADVENTURE: See that there are so many amazing men and women out there and you get to be on a journey to find your perfect treasure. You can laugh at the corny pick up line about how they lost their library card and now you’re being checked out. You can embrace your independence and realize that flying solo doesn’t mean you’re alone. (That would be Matt Kimberley of Get a Grip in that photo with me! He’s not a creeper though! ;-P)

YOUR ON THE ADVENTURE OF YOUR LIFE!!!! THE CALL TO ACTION

This is your life dammit! And it is going to be a WILD, INSANE, CRAZY, ride! If it is anything different, if it isn’t 99% a wild ride, if you aren’t looking at your life as this amazing adventure then you aren’t really living!!!

Start that passion project, book that international ticket, ask that cute person out, take a chill pill, jump out of limbo, get into trouble!!!!

Today’s call to action is as follows: Pick one thing in your life that’s been scaring the crap out of you, driving you crazy, bringing you down… basically… that’s been sucking lately. In big bold letters at the top of a piece of paper give it a movie-like title. Something like, “Lauriana Rains and the Last Crusade…to Launching My Next Business.” (Get it… hah hah hah.)

After you come up with your corny title (and it must be corny because, well, why not take life a little less seriously, ya know?) I want you to list the 3 things that scare you or bring you pain about the particular thing. After that, for each one, write down how you’re going to kick it’s ass, what you’ll get out of kicking it’s ass, and what the cost is of not kicking it’s ass. Write down how and why you’re going to take names, make moves, and kick this dilemna that’s been beating you up in the ass. THE WHOLE POINT IS TO CREATE AN ADVENTURE OUT OF IT!!!!

FOR THE COMMENTS: Feel free to share it or at least a story in the form it in the comments! It’s bound to inspire others! Or, at the very least, share a corny yet badass movie title for your adventure! Or, just say hey!

PS – Some things to come on The Mad To Live:

It’s web design for world travelers, entrepreneurs, and passion project addicts.

About Lauren Rains

Life gets pretty f*cking nuts sometimes, doesn't it? Every day I wake up more to myself and more to this world. This website is an expression of that.

Space Travelers is multi-layered exploration of our existence here on this rock we call Earth. We're going to talk about the matrix, UFOs, and astral travel, and explore our awakening into the divine masculine and feminine. We'll discover our bodies both the physical and subtle body. We'll contemplate the sacredness of mother earth and the concept of who/what the hell made this place in the first place?

I also aim to keep this website rooted and grounded, referring to topics that are effecting us in the here and now, such as fighting against the oppression of women worldwide, pealing away layers of social conditioning greedy capitalists are using to turn us into consumers, and navigating this insane technological revolution before the AI take over. I can geek out on consciousness up in space all day, but life happens here on the ground and this is the time we were born into.

This website is about integrating into our full human experience, aligning with ourselves and with each other, shedding skins and transcending into the unfolding layers of ourselves.

My wish for you, and for myself, is to unfold and evolve into our highest selves. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. We need not sell our souls to the status quo.

I'm on the journey too. I write this blog to speak to others who are waking up, or who desire to wake up. Because we can't do this alone.

  • Hey Laur!

There are actual many psychological studies that show that test subjects, when influenced to look at situations or puzzles as “challenges” rather than “problems” are more effective, determined and creative to solving the situation. So there’s actual psychological benefit to approaching situations as “challenges” that can necessarily be overcome (with ingenuity, innovativeness, etc!) instead of “problems.” 🙂

  • I saw this picture in my RSS… and CRACKED THE FUCK UP!!!!! HAHA…

Great piece and I am STOKED to work on some “passion projects” with a PASSIONATE MAD ONE LIKE YOU 🙂

    See ya lata! Surfs up,

  • Even for those who practice this shit ALL the time, posts like this give big inspiration. There are times all that passion can suddenly turn to “OMG, what the fuck am I doing?”.

Like minded people help us to keep our heads on. Just launched a brand new site/blog and with all the writing about myself, I had to name the passions out loud and in really large print I had a few OMG sessions on my hands. It was a bit scary. But it works. Follow the path of this post if you have read it and go for it!
    Aloha Wags!

  • I love your energy and this was so much fun to read!! I’ve been playing small lately especially when it comes to my work. But no more! I am kicking ass in the WE Mastermind contest and currently in first place to win the $5k worth of start-up packages which would help get my business off the ground. I too am making a web design studios and the switch to rebrand myself under an actual business name is SO SCARY. I could really use the $5k boost as I’ve been building this thing from scratch and started out from 0! It’s been inspiring me so much just to step it up with my work and because of the contest, I picked my launch date: 11.11.11! I really want to win and I know I can! 🙂 Now that’s kick ass..
